Written between Nashville and Melbourne, the second full length album from Brooke Russell and The Mean Reds, ‘The Way You Leave’ is due for release on October 18. Sweet, sultry and soaring, this new collection of songs document love, loss, friendship and regret and feature co-writes with Andrew Combs, Clare Reynolds and Tobias Hengeveld as well as covers of JD Souther and Tom Waits.

With Grant Taylor on guitar, Ben Franz on pedal steel, Luke Richardson on double bass, Roger Bergodaz on drums and Brooke Russell on lead vocal and guitar, the band tracked the bed of the album live at Union St Studios, with Roger Bergodaz at the helm. Two tracks stripped back the Mean Reds sound to feature Brooke in trio mode with double pedal steel guitar backing from Franz and special guest Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas, Tex Perkins). Reilly also composed stunning string arrangements and piano before the final touches were made by some special friends bringing backing vocal magic; Ladie Dee (Howl At The Moon), Emilee South, James Arneman and Flora Smith (Small Town Romance), Tracy McNeil and Jac Tonks (Amarillo).

about

The new single from Melbourne alt-country darlings, Brooke Russell and The Mean Reds is out on June 16 and it's the first taste of their second full-length album due later this year. Loose Change is a gritty tune about two friends, trying to change their ways but never quite seeing it through. With a full bodied, tannins-on-the-palate sound that sneaks from sultry verses into a soaring chorus, one friend asks another when it's going to be time for them to grow up for good. When is it time to stop being cautious and just be happy?

Recorded and mixed at Union Street Studios by Roger Bergodaz and mastered by Adam Dempsey at Deluxe Mastering, the new single was written by Brooke Russell with help from Tobias Hengeveld and arranged by The Mean Reds. Featuring Grant Taylor on guitar, Ben Franz on pedal steel, Luke Richardson on double bass, Roger Bergodaz on drums, Katie Scott on backing vocals and Brooke Russell on lead vocal and guitar, Loose Change will be available through Bandcamp and iTunes and to stream on Spotify, Apple Music and wherever you listen online.

lyrics

Loose Change
(Brooke Russell/Tobias Hengeveld)

The same here and bar scene but the currency’s changed
The same old excuses surrounding his name
Holding onto something that was never yours to claim

We’ve hashed out the history through the smokes and the beers
Each detail dissected still your conscience ain’t clear
Searching for redemption in this slipstream of a year
The pulls gettin’ stronger
And we ain’t gettin’ no younger

Are we gonna love somebody sometime
When will any change be more than loose
Cos we been running round town hiding hearts in the pockets of our coats
And we’ve collars up high trying to hide from the ill winds that blow

The love of a good man such a foreign idea
A hand holding my hand is shrouded in fear
From all the broken hearts collected over many years
The list’s gettin’ longer
And we ain’t gettin’ no younger

Are we gonna love somebody sometime
When will any change be more than loose
Cos we been running round town hiding hearts in the pockets of our coats
And we’ve collars up high trying to hide from the ill winds that blow
